Who Is Liev Schreiber?
Liev Schreiber is an American actor, director, screenwriter and producer. His reputation was built in the theater long before Hollywood paid attention, and that grounding still shows in his work. He is known for intense, controlled performances, a deep voice and an ability to play characters with a lot going on underneath the surface.
Most viewers know him from the Showtime drama Ray Donovan, the Scream films, the Oscar winning film Spotlight and his role as Victor Creed in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Outside acting, he is also a respected narrator, a whiskey entrepreneur and a vocal supporter of Ukraine. His full profile is on Wikipedia, and a detailed filmography sits on IMDb.
Liev Schreiber Net Worth
Liev Schreiber’s net worth is estimated at around $40 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. Other websites publish lower and higher figures, which is normal for private finances, but $40 million remains the most widely cited estimate. You can also read a breakdown of his wealth on Soap Central.
How He Built His Wealth
His income comes from several places. Film and television roles are the biggest part, and the long run of Ray Donovan (2013 to 2020) was especially valuable. That show also brought him producing credits and the follow up film, Ray Donovan: The Movie. Stage work adds to the total, though theater pays far less than screen work. Voice narration, directing, screenwriting and his business ventures round out the picture.
Schreiber is also a co-founder of Sláinte Irish Whiskey, which gives him an income stream outside the entertainment industry. He is an executive producer on his latest series, Nocturne, so he has a financial stake in how it performs.
Real Estate
Schreiber owns a home in Montauk, New York, bought for about $5.4 million in 2016. He has also held properties in Tribeca in New York City and in Los Angeles over the years. Montauk is where he is often seen with his family, away from the red carpet.
Age, Birthday and Birthplace
Liev Schreiber was born on October 4, 1967, in San Francisco, California. That makes him 59 years old. He is a Libra, born in the Chinese Year of the Goat, and part of Generation X.
His early childhood was far from settled. His family moved to British Columbia in Canada when he was very young, and his parents later separated. He then grew up between Canada and New York, and he has spoken in interviews about a childhood that was creative but not always stable. He eventually settled in New York City, which became the base for his whole career.
Height and Weight
Schreiber is commonly listed at about 6 feet 3 inches (roughly 191 cm), which matches the commanding presence he brings on screen. Some sites list him closer to 6 feet 1 inch, and the exact number has never been confirmed by him, so treat it as an estimate.
His weight is also not officially confirmed. Fan sites often quote around 190 pounds (86 kg), but this changes depending on the role. He has trained hard for physical parts such as Victor Creed in the Wolverine film, and he has also slimmed down for dramatic roles. A single weight figure is therefore never fully accurate for him.
Parents and Siblings
Parents
His father was Tell Schreiber (1941 to 2021), an actor, stage performer and carpenter. His mother, Heather Milgram, is a painter. Both were artists, and that creative environment clearly shaped him. His father’s passing in 2021 was a loss that fans and fellow actors noted at the time. You can read more family background in this Yahoo Entertainment family guide.
Siblings
Liev’s best known sibling is his half brother Pablo Schreiber, also an actor, known for Orange Is the New Black, American Gods and Halo. The two have very different screen styles but share a work ethic that comes from the same artistic family background. They have also spoken publicly about their bond.
Nationality, Ethnicity and Religion
Schreiber is American by nationality. He is of Jewish heritage, with Ukrainian Jewish roots through his maternal family. That link is one reason his support for Ukraine feels so personal to him, and it is covered on his U24 ambassador profile, the Ukrainian government’s United24 initiative page. He has also described his upbringing as culturally Jewish rather than strictly religious.
Education
Schreiber’s schooling was as unusual as his career. He attended Friends Seminary, a Quaker school in Manhattan, and also spent time at Brooklyn Technical High School. He then earned his bachelor’s degree at Hampshire College in Massachusetts in 1988.
After that, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and finished with a Master of Fine Arts from the David Geffen School of Drama at Yale University in 1992. That training explains why he moves so easily between Shakespeare and modern crime drama. His career details are also listed on the Television Academy page.
Career Milestones
Early Stage and Indie Film Years
Schreiber began in the New York theater world in the early 1990s. His film debut came in Mixed Nuts (1994), and he quickly became a name in independent cinema through Party Girl (1995), The Daytrippers (1996), Walking and Talking (1996) and Big Night (1996). These films gave him credibility long before he became a household name.
Scream and Mainstream Recognition
His wider breakthrough came as Cotton Weary in the Scream trilogy (1996 to 2000). In 1999 he played Orson Welles in the HBO movie RKO 281, a performance that earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He followed that with larger studio work including The Sum of All Fears (2002), The Manchurian Candidate (2004), The Omen (2006), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Salt (2010) and the Academy Award winning Spotlight (2015).
Stage Success
Theater has never left him. He won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play for Glengarry Glen Ross in 2005, and he has appeared in major productions of Hamlet, Macbeth and Henry V. Many critics argue that the stage remains where he does his best work.
Ray Donovan
From 2013 to 2020 he played Ray Donovan, a Los Angeles fixer who solves problems for the rich and powerful while his own family falls apart. The role earned him multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and it was extended with Ray Donovan: The Movie in 2022. For many fans, it is still his defining part.
Recent Work
In 2023, he played Otto Frank in the National Geographic miniseries A Small Light, a quiet and moving performance. In 2024 he appeared in the Netflix thriller The Perfect Couple, and he also directed the documentary Meeting Zelenskyy.
His biggest current project is Nocturne, a ten part crime drama arriving on Apple TV. It is based on Lars Kepler’s bestselling novels Lazarus and The Sandman. The series premieres on October 30, 2026, with the first two episodes, and new episodes follow every Friday until December 25. Schreiber plays Jonah Lynn, a former soldier turned homicide detective, opposite Zazie Beetz and Stephen Graham, who plays the serial killer Jurek Walter. He is also an executive producer. You can read the announcement coverage on The Upcoming.
Directing and Humanitarian Work
His feature directing debut was Everything Is Illuminated (2005). Beyond film, he co-founded BlueCheck Ukraine, a relief organisation supporting people affected by the war, and serves as an ambassador for United24. Schreiber was admitted to a New York hospital for tests after a headache and was cleared to return to work shortly after, according to a WJLA report.
