Yannick Bisson Biography and Quick Facts
Yannick Denis Bisson is a Canadian actor, director and producer. He plays William Murdoch, a Toronto detective in the early 1900s who solves crimes with science and gadgets way ahead of his time. The show is Murdoch Mysteries, and he has led it since 2008. His Wikipedia page says he's been working as an actor since 1984, so he was already a veteran long before Murdoch came along.

Yannick Bisson Age and Birthday
He was born on May 16, 1969, which makes him 57 right now. You'll find that same date on Wikipedia, on IMDb, in the Canadian Encyclopedia and on Famous Birthdays.
Some random sites out there list different birthdays for him. I wouldn't go with those. The May 16 date is the one every solid source agrees on, and it makes him a Taurus.
Early Life, Parents and Siblings
Bisson was born in Montreal and has both French and English roots. As a teenager he moved to Toronto, and that's where acting turned into a real career. The story goes that his father noticed he liked performing and told him to answer a newspaper ad for child actors. He did, and that was that.
Who are Yannick Bisson's parents?
His parents are Gaetan Bisson and Lise Dicaire. His dad ran his own contracting business, and some reports say he worked on big projects in Montreal, including something connected to the Olympic velodrome. Because of that work, the family moved around a lot while Yannick was growing up. There's a bit more about this in his Tribute.ca biography.
Does Yannick Bisson have siblings?
He does, but the details are thin. Bisson grew up in a blended family, and public profiles mention a sister, a half brother and two step brothers. He's also referred to someone called Guyot as his little brother. He doesn't talk about family much in public, so be wary of any sibling names you see online unless they came from him directly.
Education and School History
Given how long he's worked, you might guess he had a long road through school. He didn't. He started acting so young that regular classes were hard to keep up with, and VisionTV has mentioned that he never finished high school.
His schooling was all over the place, so here's the rough timeline.
Early school years
He went to school in Montreal from kindergarten to Grade 3. Then the family moved, and Grades 4 to 7 were spread over Florida and Texas, with a few different schools along the way.
Toronto school years
Once the family settled in Toronto, he went to Highland Junior High for Grades 7 and 8, then Eastern Commerce Collegiate Institute for Grades 9 and 10. In Grade 11 he took a few credits at Central Commerce Collegiate Institute, then left to act full time and help his family out.
As far as anyone knows, there's no college or university degree. Most of what he knows about the craft, he learned by doing it.
Height, Weight and Appearance
IMDb lists Yannick Bisson at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 metres). My older article said 5 feet 11, and a few other sites still do. I went with IMDb this time since it seems the more reliable of the two.
Weight is harder. Nothing official has ever been published. Some older profiles throw around a figure of about 72 kg (159 lbs), but I couldn't track that to a trustworthy source, so take it with a pinch of salt. What's easy to see is the dark brown eyes and dark hair, which has picked up some grey over the years.
Career Journey
The early years
He began with TV commercials as a kid. At 15 he landed his first real role in the 1984 CBC movie Hockey Night, alongside Megan Follows and Rick Moranis. In 1986 he starred in Brothers by Choice and Toby McTeague. After moving to Toronto and taking acting lessons, he got a part in the sitcom Learning the Ropes in 1988. The Canadian Encyclopedia goes through those early years in more detail if you want it.
The 1990s and 2000s
From there the work kept coming. He led the action series High Tide from 1994 to 1997, then starred in the CBC show Nothing Too Good for a Cowboy. He also had a recurring part as lawyer Brian Tedrow on Soul Food. Plenty of viewers remember him best as FBI agent Jack Hudson in Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, where he appeared in all 56 episodes.
Hallmark and other projects
Fans of cozy mysteries may know him from Aurora Teagarden Mysteries on Hallmark, where he played Martin Bartell, a CIA agent who moves to town and starts dating the lead. He left in 2018. He also had a small part in Casino Jack in 2010, hosted the kids' show The Adventures of Napkin Man from 2013, and guest hosted This Hour Has 22 Minutes.
Behind the camera
His directing debut was the Season 4 Murdoch episode "Buffalo Shuffle." Since then he's taken on more behind the scenes work, and TV Insider credits him as an executive producer on the series.
Murdoch Mysteries in 2026
The biggest change since my 2024 article is where the show stands. Back then, Season 18 had only just been confirmed. Now we're talking about Season 20.
Season 20 is here
Murdoch Mysteries has been renewed for Season 20, and Bisson has said he's coming back as Murdoch. The season has 21 episodes and takes the story abroad, with Murdoch's travels leading him to Malta, according to TV Insider. In Canada you can stream it on CBC Gem. Filming was set to run from May 19 to December 18, 2026, so it's still going on right now.
Why the show keeps going
Bisson has admitted he never expected the show to run more than two or three years. When it started in 2008, there weren't any period dramas on Canadian TV at all. Emmys.com says it now airs in around 110 countries. For a show that began as a bit of a gamble, that's quite a run.
Awards and Recognition
He hasn't collected a shelf full of trophies, but the ones he has are meaningful.
Fan's Choice Award
He won this at the 2016 Canadian Screen Awards, which is voted on by viewers.
ACTRA Toronto Award of Excellence
He got this in 2017 for his overall body of work.
Canadian Screen Award for Napkin Man
In 2015 he won Best Host in a Pre School, Children's or Youth Program or Series for The Adventures of Napkin Man.
Murdoch Mysteries has also won a few Golden Screen Awards over the years.
Yannick Bisson Net Worth 2026
Most people landing on this page want to know about the money. Yannick Bisson's net worth is estimated at about $5 million, a number that shows up on sites like Tuko. Keep in mind it's an estimate. Nobody has seen his actual books, so read it as a rough guess.
Where the money comes from
Most of it comes from Murdoch Mysteries. He's the lead, he directs some episodes and he works as an executive producer, so he earns from several angles. On top of that, he has over 100 film and TV credits, including Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye, High Tide and Aurora Teagarden Mysteries, and he's done commercials too, such as a run of ads for CIBC.
Real estate
Property has been a big part of his life for a long time. Before acting became steady work, he enjoyed fixing up and flipping houses. He sold a custom modern house in East York, Toronto, which Toronto Life wrote about. He also put a cabin in Calabasas, California, on the market for $1.625 million, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.
Wife, Marriage and Love Story
Bisson's wife is Shantelle Bisson. Earlier in her career she went by Chantal Craig. They met as teenagers in high school in Scarborough and got married on May 26, 1990. That's more than 35 years together. Streets of Toronto has even run a piece on how they met and why the marriage has lasted.
Shantelle has done a lot herself. She's been an actress, a model, a Toronto Argonauts cheerleader and a fitness instructor, and she appeared in Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye and Murdoch Mysteries. Today she works as a TV producer, an author and a parenting and relationship expert, and she writes regularly for Zoomer Magazine, according to Wikipedia.

Children and Grandchild
The couple has three daughters, and every one of them has popped up on Murdoch Mysteries at some point.
Brianna Bisson
Brianna is the eldest, born on St. Patrick's Day. She played Penny Renton in the 2010 episode "Love and Human Remains," per IMDb. In August 2021 she had a baby boy named Rory Ian Franklin, making Bisson a grandfather. He announced it on Instagram.
Dominique Bisson
Dominique, the middle daughter, played Gloria Abercrombie in the Season 2 episode "Snakes and Ladders."
Mikaela Bisson
Mikaela is the youngest, born on August 30, 1996. She's appeared in a few episodes, including "Manhunt" and "The Murdoch Appreciation Society."
Hobbies, Charity and Life Outside Acting
Away from work, Bisson is big on cycling and collects bicycles. He likes skiing, carpentry and home design too. In an interview with The Gate, he was described as someone who supports several Canadian charities, including Sheena's Place, Camp Ooch and Childhood Cancer Canada.
Between acting jobs he used to work as a builder to help support his family. That probably explains why his houses keep getting attention from design writers.
