General Instructions:
You are required to communicate persuasively in order to gain agreement from others. This is to be demonstrated by:
- interacting with a supervisor or manager,
- managing a meeting of people involved in organising a forum or conference,and
- presentingthe benefits of an idea, a process, or product to a group of people atthis forum or conference.
Detailed assessment tasks, split into three (3) parts, commencing on page 4below are provided to guide you in collecting the necessary documentary and observational evidence to demonstrate your ability to undertake the tasks associated with this portfolio. The way you gather this evidence will vary according to the options below:
Using a chosen actual workplace – ensure all workplace documents are completed in line with the detailed task instructions. Furthermore, a video showing your interactions with workplace colleagueswill have to be uploaded to the Connect LMS so that your assessor can observeyour interactions. If you have any doubts concerning the suitability of your chosen workplace, please consult your assessor.
Using SIM Co simulated workplace – ensure all SIM Co documents are completed in line with the detailed task instructions and the scenario provided in Appendix 1. In addition, observational evidence may be collected in two ways:
- in the classroom – students are to role play with other students in the class. Assessment by the classroom teacher.
- online students – record a video of the role play with family members, friends or other appropriate persons so your assessor can view and assess the video presentation.
Evidence to be submitted:
Once all the assessment tasks have been completed, you will need to upload the following evidence:
- Answers to all questions in the spaces provided in this document
- Action plan
- Video of meeting with supervisor or manager
- Video of forum or conference presentation
Materials and equipment to be supplied by the student:
Electronic devices for video/observation evidence as directed.
Work, Health and Safety:
A work health and safety check of the assessment environment is to be conducted by the student prior to the observation activity and any hazards addressed appropriately.
Number of Attempts:
You will receive up to two (2) attempts at this assessment task. Should your 1st attempt be unsatisfactory (U), your teacher will provide feedback and will arrange a date for your 2nd attempt. If your 2nd attempt is unsatisfactory (U), or you fail to attend a date scheduled for the 2nd attempt, you will receive an overall unsatisfactory result for this assessment task. Only one re-assessment attempt may be granted for each assessment task. For more information, refer to the Student Rules.

Instructions to Assessor
|
Students are to collect a variety of documentary and observational evidence. This evidence may be collected in their workplace or by adopting the SIM Co simulated workplace provided in Connect.
It is envisaged that most students studying this unit in a classroom environment will elect to use the SIM Co simulated workplace. In this case, you will need to schedule suitable classroom times for them to role play with their classroom peers in order to assess their observational evidence and demonstrate how well they have been able to communicate with influence. However, some students may elect to collect their documentary and observational evidence from an actual workplace. In this case, you will need to assess whether this workplace will be suitable. If so, then students will have to record a video of their interactions with work colleagues and upload this recording to the Connect LMS for you to assess.
In either case, students are to record a video of their interactions with work colleagues (from the workplace) or role play with family members, friends or other appropriate persons (for those using SIM Co).
In all cases, the marking criteria guide will need to be used to ensure they have fully met each criterionrelating to their documentation and observations.
This assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the management and leadership field of work and include access to:
- Relevant workplace documentation and resources.
- Case studies and, where possible, real situations.
- Interaction with others.

- Assessment instructions
- Learning resources
- For online students, a device for recording a role play. For classroom students, this may be scheduled to occur in the classroom.
Time restrictions: Nil
Students are permitted to contact the assessor to ask questions if they require clarification. They may also access the services provided by ‘Studiosity’.
Assessment extensions are allowed. However, students must contact the assessor and request an extension prior to the assessment due date.
Assessors must satisfy the requirements for assessors in applicable vocational education and training legislation, frameworks and/or standards
Students must address assessment requirements as outlined in the Assessment Marking Criteria for Assessment 2.
Reasonable Adjustment: Assessors are to assess persuasive interactions directly in the classroom or by viewing a video which online students and students undertaking the assessment in their workplacehave uploaded to the Connect LMS.
Materials required for practical observation:
- Access to the Connect LMS platform and any presentations (videos) submitted.
- Phone or online video conferencing tools for oral questions and answers where identified.
- Electronic devices capable of capturing and uploading video evidences.
- The student must be given access to SIM Co – Superior Implements Company - Simulated Workplace documentation and resources and the BSBLDR503 Unit Study Guide.
- A competency conversation, where practicable,may need to be conducted by the assessor in order to make a final judgement of competence.

Part A: One-on-one persuasive meeting
In order to demonstrate your ability to communicate persuasively with your manager or supervisor, you are to choose a suitable workplace scenario. The following are suggestions only:
- purchase and install a new records management system that will reduce the complexity of maintaining records;
- develop a quality system for the purpose of becoming a preferred government supplier;
- purchase a new piece of machinery to improve productivity;
- build a new client base for the purpose of expanding the company’s market share;
Alternatively, you may choose the SIM Co option which is given below:
- seeka pay rise because you have been a SIM Co sales representative for the past three years and have surpassed all sales targets.
Now address the four (4) tasks below:
Task 1 – STAR Methodology:
Using the STAR methodology (Situation, Task, Application and Response)outlined in the learning material, you are to answer the following questions in the spaces provided relating to this proposal. Note: STA will be applicable before the meeting, R will be applicable after the meeting.
S - Situation:
Is this a realistic proposal?
What supports your proposal?
What type of communication or interaction will you use?
Who do you need to approach about this proposal and when?
T - Task:
What are some of the actions and considerations you need to make related to the meeting?
What time will the meeting occur?
What are the FACTS supporting your proposal?
What research or information is required to support your proposal?
Are there any other stakeholders, organisations or networks to be considered?
What are the key issues for discussion?
A - Application:
What organisational protocols must be observed?
What confidentiality or ethics issues do you need to consider?
What motivations drive your manager? How will these impact upon his/her decision?
What may be some of your manager’s arguments against the proposal?
What responses will you have to your manager’s potential arguments?
What is your BATNA and what will the manager’s BATNA likely be? (Best Alternative to This Negotiated Agreement)
What could a possible ZOPA be that may be suitable for both parties in consideration of the respective BATNAs (Zone of Possible Agreement)
Task 2 – The Persuasive Conversation:
Now that you have prepared for this conversation using the STAR method, you are to conduct this conversation with your supervisor, manager or other appropriate person according to the proposal you have chosen.
Your assessor will be looking for your ability to address the following criteria when you meet with your supervisor or manager:
- clearly communicatethe need for this meeting;
- clearly put forward your position at this meeting;
- maintain focus in the meeting;
- negotiate effectively and persuasively to seek common ground through negotiation and compromise;
- adopt a communication strategy that built trust and a positive relationship throughout the meeting;
- acknowledge a difference of opinion to encourage the ongoing examination of all options;
- use relevant communication styles to present the position to affect the negotiated outcome;
- demonstrate active listening skills, considering and respecting the need and business perspective of the other person in relation to the negotiation.
R - Result:
What were the outcomes and/or agreements negotiated in the meeting?
Regardless of the outcome, what can you do, moving forward, to maintain the credibility and trust of your manager?
What went well in the negotiation meeting process?
Task 3 – Action Plan:You may use a template from your chosen workplace or use/modify the Action Plan of SIM Co.
Based on the outcomes of the meeting with your manager develop a simple action plan that demonstrates:
- what you will do to support and respond to the agreed outcomes;
- when you will get this done; and
- what resources you will need to make this happen.
Part B: Meeting to Prepare a Forum or Conference Presentation
Task 4 – Preparing a meeting agenda
You have been asked to deliver a presentation to a work forum or conference (your choice) either:
- based on an actual workplace scenario, preferably related to that which you used in Part A of this assessment; or
- based on the SIM Co simulated workplace scenario, outline a process to develop a broader client base that you have found very successful in exceeding your sales targets for the past three years,
However, before you can deliver this presentation, you are to meet with key organisers of this forum or conference for the purpose of obtaininginformation about when and where the forum or conference is to be held, who will be in attendance, the time allocated to give this presentation, and the reason why you have been asked to make this presentation. You are to disagree with an important aspect of the information provided and persuade meeting attendees to support your standpoint. This may include the amount of time you will be given to present.
On the basis of this information, you are to prepare an agenda for this meeting which must include (at a minimum):
- the meeting purpose, venue, time and attendees (minimum 1 colleague (your manager), 1 external client (a current client) and another participant (a current staff member)
(* To respect privacy, attendees’ names may be changed where using actual workplace attendees)
- topics for discussion that includes a brief brainstorming activity to identify conference needs or topics, action items, timeframes for action and any attachments that need to be read by attendees prior to the meeting.
- the WHS, Access and Equity, Confidentiality/Privacy issues that will relate to, or impact the conference/event.
- request for questions from staff who will attend the conference. (These questions will be addressed by you in your presentation).
You can locate and download the Meeting Agenda plan template from the Superior Implements Company (SIM Co.) intranet or use a suitable template from your workplace.
Task 5 – Conducting the Meeting (inc. minutes)
You must conduct the meeting (with 3 minimum attendees representing an internal colleague, an external client and another attendee) in accordance with the Agenda you developed in Task 4. Record a video or conduct a role play (in class) of the meetingto the TAFE Connect LMS. Your video or role play must evidence the following:
- achievement of agreed outcomes (decision making) through consensus and compromise with participants;
- respect for the values, concerns and views of others;
- documentation of the meeting minutes and any actions required;
- distribution of the meeting minutes to participants (e.g. evidence of an email to participant with meeting minutes and actions).
Part C: Presenting a Forum or Conference Presentation
You have been asked to deliver a presentation to a work forum or conference (your choice) either:
- based on an actual workplace scenario: preferably related to that which you usedin Part A of this assessment; or
- based on the SIM Co simulated workplace scenario: outline a process to develop a broader client base. You have found this process very successful and it has led to you exceeding your sales targets for the past three years,
In either case, you are to plan a presentation to a group of at least three (3) people in thisforum or conference that outlines the benefits of this idea, process, or product for the purpose of generating much interest and buy-in from the audience.
Task 6 – Marketing, Communication and Reporting the event
In planning for this forum or conference prepare astakeholder communication plan. You can locate and download the StakeholderCommunication plan template from the Superior Implements Company (SIM Co.) intranet or a suitable template from your workplace. A table format is acceptable. This Communication Plan must cover the communication requirements before, during and after the conference/event and be inclusive of the following:
- identification of audience you will be presenting to and their potential level of interest they may have in your presentation;
- the informationyou intend to deliver at theforum or conference;
- the best way to present this information at the forum or conference in order to get greatest support;
- resources you will need to aid in the presentation of your information.
Respond also to the following questions to identify the communication methods you will use:
How will you promote and market the conference/event, (inclusive of any considerations to branding/marketing requirements relating to your organisation)?
How will you communicate information to the conference/event support staff and participants?
What processes will you use to report on any conference/event outcomes before, during and after the event? (Inclusive of those for whom you may need to develop these reports)
Task 7 – Prepare the Conference Presentation
Prepare your presentation for delivery of your conference topic. This may be prepared using PPT or another suitable presentation mode. Either way, the presentation is to be a minimum of 10 minutes in length. The presentation is to consist of two (2) sections:
- Content to speak to;
- Answers to staff questions:assume that these have been collected from the staff members. (The questions are located at the end of this assessment.) Distribute these questions to your audience and ask that these questions be read to you. You will then address the question and welcome any feedback from the audience.
Task 8 – Conduct the Presentation
You are to deliver your presentation in this forum or conference to no less than three (3) participants.
Your presentation mustevidence the following:
- inclusivity of a cross cultural audience.
- application of the principles of influence in the presentation.
- ability to confidently address audience questions, engagement and feedback.
- use language that is suitable for the audience (cross cultural inclusive).
- gain immediate feedback to ensure the audience has understood the intent of the presentation.
- keep the presentation focused on key issues and the transfer of information.
Task 9 – Feedback
You are to develop or source an audience evaluation form with appropriate feedback questions. You must ensure your audience completes and returns the evaluation for review. You must upload these completed feedback evaluation forms with your video.
You will be assessed on the written responses, developed documents/presentations and activities in accordance with the Assessment Marking Criteria Sheet.
Questions to be addressed by you at the conference:
- What environmental issues does the business face and how are these issues addressed?
- If you had to choose one policy/procedure which you think makes this business a good place to work, what would that policy be and why?
- Several of our workers come from different cultures. There are many with English as a second language and there is much cultural diversity. How does our business ensure equality of working conditions and opportunities for advancement?
