Many organisations now embrace the ethos of corporate social responsibility and have embedded it throughout their organisations for a number of years, actively encouraging their staff to be socially responsible and to strive to improve the lives of those around them.Part of this has been to consider how they can have a positive impact on the lives of staff, members, the environment, the local community and the interests of wider society. It means managing the economic, social and environmental impacts of their operations to maximise the benefits and minimise the negatives.
Company Challenge: Negative Publicity
Part A:
A very serious matter has recently surfaced in the media, revealing that your organisation has not been totally pro-active in its approach to the ethos of the living wage. They have been paying the living wage (beginning 1 January 2015) but secret internal memos/documents have revealed plans to ask staff to sign new contracts, offsetting national living wage costs by ending additional pay and benefits, or lose their jobs.
In a secret meeting your staffs has said this move was "ridiculous". "We work for them, we make the money for them, and we`re always understaffed. On top of everything, they don`t give you any more additional pay, paid breaks and other benefits, and we are also threatened that we could also lose our jobs”
Task:
The CEO/CFF and PR/marketing and HR department will need to have a crisis meeting to respond and rectify this situation. You need provide a letter on this matter to all stakeholders and a letter to all employees that outline the companies’ policy on the living wage and to clarify the company policy on break times/pensions/performance related pay and the continued investment and development of all its employees.
