Education
High School Education
Henderson attended Hopewell High School in Hopewell, Virginia. He was a strong student as well as a great athlete and graduated as a straight A student with a 4.0 GPA. On the field he earned the Virginia Gatorade Football Player of the Year award for the 2019 to 2020 season, which put him on the radar of nearly every major college program in the country.
College Education
Henderson went on to The Ohio State University, where he played running back for the Buckeyes from 2021 through 2024. He was named an Ohio State Scholar Athlete for keeping his grade point average above 3.0, and he was part of the team that won the national championship. His college tape is a big reason the Patriots wanted him.
Career Milestones
Henderson's rise has been steady. A few moments stand out in his story.
First, his high school years in Virginia made him one of the top running back recruits in the country. Second, his time at Ohio State from 2021 to 2024 turned him into a household name in college football, and he finished his career with a national title. Third, in 2025 the Patriots selected him in the second round, 38th overall, and he signed his rookie deal that July.
Since then he has settled into the NFL as a key part of the Patriots offense, one built around young quarterback Drake Maye.
Role and Playing Style With the Patriots
Henderson is the explosive, change of pace playmaker in New England's backfield. His job is to bring big play speed, outside zone runs and perimeter stretch plays to an offense that leans heavily on Maye.
He shares the workload with Rhamondre Stevenson. Stevenson takes a heavier share of the early down carries, the short yardage snaps and the pass protection duties, while Henderson acts as the more explosive, open field option. He showed his vertical ability with a 39 yard rushing touchdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a run that fans still talk about. Read what supporters say about his role and watch his highlights on YouTube.
Latest Injury Update
Good news for Patriots fans: Henderson is healthy and active with no current injury designation. According to DraftSharks, he is fully healthy and off the injury report after recovering completely from a preseason ankle injury.
The trouble started on August 24, when he slipped on slick turf during practice and sprained his ankle. Because of that, he missed the Week 1 season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. He returned to full practice before Week 2 and has played a steady complementary role next to Stevenson ever since. You can also read the full injury story on Yahoo Sports and a detailed breakdown on the PerfectWriters blog.
Recent Practice Reports
From August 24 to September 13, Henderson stayed completely off the practice field. He missed every Week 1 walkthrough, which led to him being ruled out against Seattle.
From September 14 to 16, he officially returned to practice. By Wednesday's session he was upgraded to a full participant after working through individual footwork and ball security drills, as Yahoo Sports reported. Right now he logs regular practice reps and carries no active injury designation.
Game by Game Stats
Since coming back, Henderson's usage has held steady at roughly 8 to 16 touches per game. Here is how each outing has gone.
| Week and Opponent | Carries | Rushing Yards | TDs | Targets and Receptions | Receiving Yards | Key Usage Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Week 1 vs. Seahawks | None | None | None | None | None | Inactive with an ankle injury |
| Week 2 vs. Steelers | 16 | 76 | 1 | 0 and 0 | 0 | Heavy usage, longest run of 39 yards |
| Week 3 vs. Jaguars | 8 | 23 | 0 | 1 and 1 | 6 | Limited by game script and a tight defense |
| Week 4 vs. Bills | 14 | 42 | 0 | 2 and 0 | 0 | More rushing volume but struggled for efficiency |
His best day came against the Steelers, where he combined power and speed. The Jaguars game was quieter because the game flow did not favor the run, and against the Bills he saw more carries but could not find much space.
